Celebrating Jorge Gutiérrez: A Maestro of Emotional Storytelling
In the diverse landscape of the entertainment industry, few storytellers are as deeply rooted in their origins as Jorge Gutiérrez. From his upbringing straddling the bustling streets of Mexico City and the vibrant culture of Tijuana to his groundbreaking contributions in both television and film, Gutiérrez’s journey epitomizes the power of personal interpretation and cultural authenticity in storytelling.
Reflecting on his formative years, Gutiérrez shares, “When I was nine years old, something happened where I just started romanticizing Mexican culture even more. The closer you are to a different culture, the more you kind of appreciate it.” He adds, “And so I became kind of obsessed with Mexican folk and pop culture.”
Gutiérrez’s experience of navigating two worlds fuels his artistic imagination. “I got to experience life on both sides. There were days where I would wake up in Mexico, go to school in the US, come back to Mexico,” he recalls. “I must have crossed that border 1000 times and I think for me and anybody growing up with both cultures and having a foot on each land and having that ear on the music and the food, I think it makes artists and the border really special because we’re kind of a bridge, we get to experience both sides.”
Gutiérrez’s commitment to authenticity and interpretation is evident in his work. “I am of the belief that as a Mexican, it’s my birthright to be able to tell a story from coming from a very personal place,” he asserts. “And so one of my big inspirations was the Mexican muralists. I’m a big Mexican Art History guy so I love Diego Rivera, Siqueiros and Orozco. I love that when you see their murals, you get to see their version of the conquests, their version of Mexican independence, their version of the culture. So it really freed me to go, I don’t speak for the culture, I don’t speak for the country. I speak from my experience.”
Reflecting on his proudest moments, Gutiérrez shares a touching memory of his father’s reaction to “The Book of Life” premiere in Mexico City. “As the movie was getting to the big emotional moment, I turned to look at him, and he was crying,” he recalls. “He was crying and he just looked at me and he was so proud. He didn’t even need to say anything. I told him after that those were the most beautiful words he never spoke to me. I think about it all the time.”
Looking ahead, Gutiérrez dreams of leaving a legacy of diversity and inclusivity in the entertainment industry. “My dream of dreams is to leave the medium better than I found it and leave the medium more diverse for the next generation,” he shares. “And I always say, you know, when I die, use my bones to create a ladder and keep going up.”

Hubo días en los que me despertaba en México, iba a la escuela en Estados Unidos y volvía a México”, recuerda. “Debo haber cruzado esa frontera mil veces y creo que, para mí y cualquiera que crezca con ambas culturas y tenga un pie en cada tierra y preste atención a la música y la comida, creo que eso hace que los artistas y la frontera sean realmente especiales porque somos como un puente, podemos experimentar ambos lados.”
El compromiso de Gutiérrez con la autenticidad y la interpretación es evidente en su trabajo. “Creo firmemente que como mexicano, es mi derecho de nacimiento poder contar una historia desde un lugar muy personal”, afirma. “Así que una de mis grandes inspiraciones fueron los muralistas mexicanos. Soy un gran aficionado a la historia del arte mexicano, así que amo a Diego Rivera, Siqueiros y Orozco. Me encanta que cuando ves sus murales, puedes ver su versión de las conquistas, su versión de la independencia mexicana, su versión de la cultura. Así que realmente me liberó para decir, no hablo por la cultura, no hablo por el país. Hablo desde mi experiencia.”
Reflexionando sobre sus momentos más orgullosos, Gutiérrez comparte un conmovedor recuerdo de la reacción de su padre al estreno de “El Libro de la Vida” en la Ciudad de México. “Cuando la película llegaba al gran momento emocional, me volví para mirarlo y él estaba llorando”, recuerda. “Estaba llorando y simplemente me miró y estaba tan orgulloso. Ni siquiera necesitó decir nada. Le dije después que esas fueron las palabras más hermosas que nunca me dijo. Pienso en eso todo el tiempo.”
Mirando hacia el futuro, Gutiérrez sueña con dejar un legado de diversidad e inclusión en la industria del entretenimiento. “Mi sueño es dejar el medio mejor de lo que lo encontré y hacerlo más diverso para la próxima generación”, comparte. “Y siempre digo, ya sabes, cuando muera, usa mis huesos para crear una escalera y seguir subiendo.”
