San Diego – The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and the North County Transit District (NCTD) have announced that both agencies will offer free transit rides on Wednesday, October 2, to encourage residents to save money, reduce carbon emissions, and change their routines.
Free Ride Day includes all MTS buses, the Trolley, COASTER, SPRINTER, and BREEZE fixed-route services. This will be the fifth Free Ride Day held jointly by MTS and NCTD. Sponsored by Mission Fed Credit Union, the event is part of California Clean Air Day, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve regional air quality.
“For those who’ve considered using transit as an alternative to driving, Free Ride Day is a great opportunity to explore the region or commute to work via the Trolley or bus,” said Stephen Whitburn, MTS Board Chair and San Diego City Councilmember, District 3. “It’s a day to celebrate transit and see what MTS has to offer. It’s a great way to support clean air, sustainable solutions, and a new future for how more and more people get around town.”
MTS and NCTD have hosted Free Ride Day four times since 2018, and in 2021, they extended it to a free ride month. Each year, the transit agencies have seen a significant increase in ridership, by up to 30%.
“Using transit is a great way to improve air quality in our communities,” said Jewel Edson, NCTD Board Chair and Solana Beach Deputy Mayor. “Free Ride Day provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience NCTD’s services and the many benefits of the region’s transit network.”
Mission Fed Credit Union is sponsoring this year’s Free Ride Day as part of its Community is Everything initiative, which focuses on investing in the community to enhance the well-being of the region’s residents.

San Diego – El Sistema de Transporte Metropolitano de San Diego (MTS) y el Distrito de Tránsito del Condado del Norte (NCTD) han anunciado que ambas agencias ofrecerán viajes gratuitos en el transporte público el miércoles 2 de octubre, con el objetivo de animar a los residentes a ahorrar dinero, reducir las emisiones de carbono y cambiar sus rutinas.
El Día de Transporte Gratuito incluirá todos los autobuses de MTS, el Trolley, COASTER, SPRINTER y los servicios de ruta fija BREEZE. Este será el quinto Día de Transporte Gratuito organizado conjuntamente por MTS y NCTD. Patrocinado por Mission Fed Credit Union, el evento es parte del Día de Aire Limpio de California, que busca reducir las emisiones de carbono y mejorar la calidad del aire regional.

MTS y NCTD han organizado el Día de Transporte Gratuito en cuatro ocasiones desde 2018, y en 2021, ampliaron el evento a un mes de transporte gratuito. Cada año, las agencias de transporte han visto un aumento significativo en la cantidad de pasajeros, de hasta un 30%.
