Event Celebrates Six Decades of Transformative Mentorship
SANTA ANA, Calif. — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire (BBBS OC/IE) hosted its 60th annual Gourmet Dinner at the Newport Beach Country Club. The evening raised $1.8 million in support of the organization’s programs, dedicated to creating and sustaining one-on-one mentoring relationships that have a profound impact on youth in the community.
As one of the largest fundraising events in the region, the Gourmet Dinner brought together community leaders, supporters, Bigs, Littles, and BBBS OC/IE staff to celebrate the power of mentorship. The event featured a cocktail reception, a live auction, a sit-down dinner, and the recognition of individuals and pairs whose lives have been transformed through the program. In the past decade alone, the dinner has raised nearly $20 million, providing crucial funding for the organization’s initiatives.
The evening began with a presentation of colors by the American Legion Post 291, accompanied by the All-American Boys Choir. Cary Hyden, BBBS OC/IE Board Chairman, welcomed attendees and shared personal reflections from his 40 years as a Big Brother.
“When I first became a mentor, I thought I was giving back by supporting a younger person in need of guidance,” Hyden said. “But what I didn’t expect was how deeply the experience would impact me. Mentoring has shaped my life in ways I could never have imagined, and it continues to remind me of the power we all have to make a difference.”
Sloane Keane, CEO of BBBS OC/IE, highlighted the organization’s 60-year history, noting that the impact of mentorship extends far beyond academic achievement. “Through Big Brothers Big Sisters, we aren’t just helping kids graduate from high school or get into college. We’re helping them navigate the challenges of higher education and supporting them as they build their futures—whether that means landing a first job or pursuing a lifelong dream,” Keane said.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments was the presentation of a success story video featuring a Big Brother, Ralph, and his Little Brother, Alessandro. The pair later took the stage, where Alessandro expressed his gratitude for Ralph’s unwavering support. “Your constant presence made all the difference,” Alessandro shared. “You didn’t just push me to do better in school—you helped me see a future I never thought possible.”
The night also honored Tom Reyes, President of Reyes Beverage Group West, with the Joel K. Rubenstein Award, recognizing his longstanding support of the organization. “It’s truly humbling to receive this award,” Reyes said. “I’ve seen firsthand how mentoring changes lives, and I’m proud to be part of an organization that has been doing this important work for 60 years. This isn’t just about me—it’s about every Big, every Little, and all of the people who make this program possible.”
The live auction featured several exclusive items, including a private jet to Napa, VIP tickets to Coachella, and floor seats for a Lakers game. During the Fund-a-Need portion, donations were pledged at various levels, and Reyes himself committed to a $200,000 matching gift, helping drive the night’s fundraising total to $1.8 million.
With over 20,000 alumni, BBBS OC/IE continues to make a tangible difference in the community. In fiscal year 2024 alone, the organization served nearly 4,000 youth, with 98% of participants graduating from high school on time and 87% pursuing higher education. The organization remains committed to providing the guidance and resources necessary to help youth in the Inland Empire and Orange County achieve their full potential.
