La Jolla, CA – A longtime favorite for school field trips, family outings, and ocean lovers, Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is stepping into a whole new era. Starting today, the aquarium will officially debut Living Seas, its most significant transformation in over 30 years, and the experience promises to be unforgettable.
This new exhibit invites guests to step inside the Pacific Ocean itself. It’s more than just a visual upgrade. Living Seas creates an interactive, sensory journey that stirs curiosity and brings the underwater world closer than ever before.
“We’re not just reimagining the space, we’re reintroducing it to the community,” said Megan Dickerson, Director of Exhibits. “From the sounds of marine life to immersive walk-through habitats, this exhibit is designed to be felt, not just seen.”
Highlights include a Giant Pacific Octopus habitat with a walk-through viewing portal and a re-creation of what it feels like to stand beneath the Scripps Pier. The Open Ocean area is expanding to include more schooling fish and the aquarium’s popular rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle. There’s also a stunning new coral reef that is more than four times the size of the previous exhibit and a lush mangrove section that appears to grow from the walls.
Construction for Living Seas began back in August, but what’s emerged is more than just tanks and displays. State-of-the-art cooling systems and digital projections now allow the space to shift from daytime wonder to evening magic. Under UV light, hidden features glow and the ocean’s nightlife takes center stage.

Birch Aquarium is also adding a new dining experience with the Blue Wave Bistro, curated by local catering company Behind the Scenes. With a fresh menu and ocean views from the bluff, it’s set to become a favorite stop for guests wanting to linger and enjoy a moment by the sea.
Another exciting change is the introduction of evening tickets. Locals can swing by after work, catch a sunset, and explore the exhibits without the daytime crowds. It’s a new way to experience the aquarium, and one that aligns beautifully with San Diego’s laid-back rhythm.
Executive Director Harry Helling emphasized that Living Seas is a community effort. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped bring this to life—from the architects and animal care teams to the educators and neighbors who believe in what this place stands for.”
And what it stands for is something deeply local. With research ties to Scripps Institution of Oceanography just down the hill, Living Seas also gives visitors a chance to learn about the science happening in our own backyard. From sea star conservation to jellyfish research connected to cancer studies, the exhibit shows how what’s happening in our waters connects to the wider world.

La Jolla, CA – Un favorito de siempre para excursiones escolares, salidas familiares y amantes del océano, el Acuario Birch en La Jolla entra en una nueva etapa. El próximo 22 de mayo, el acuario abrirá oficialmente Living Seas, su transformación más importante en más de 30 años, y promete ser una experiencia inolvidable.
Esta nueva exhibición invita a los visitantes a sumergirse de lleno en el Océano Pacífico. Más que una renovación visual, Living Seas es un recorrido interactivo y sensorial que despierta la curiosidad y acerca el mundo marino como nunca antes.
“No solo estamos rediseñando el espacio, lo estamos reintroduciendo a la comunidad”, dijo Megan Dickerson, directora de exhibiciones. “Desde los sonidos de la vida marina hasta hábitats por los que se puede caminar, esta experiencia está diseñada para sentirse, no solo observarse”.

También hay un arrecife de coral impresionante, más de cuatro veces más grande que el anterior, y una sección de manglares tropicales que parece crecer desde las paredes.
La construcción de Living Seas comenzó en agosto del año pasado, pero lo que ha surgido es mucho más que tanques y vitrinas. El espacio ahora cuenta con sistemas modernos de enfriamiento, proyecciones digitales y detalles fluorescentes que brillan bajo luz UV, lo cual permite que la exhibición se transforme del día a la noche, revelando la vida marina que solo se activa después del atardecer.
Otra novedad es el Blue Wave Bistro, el nuevo restaurante en el acuario a cargo de la empresa local Behind the Scenes Catering. Con un menú fresco y vistas espectaculares desde los acantilados, será el lugar ideal para disfrutar un descanso entre exhibiciones.
