SAN DIEGO, CA – As summer unfolds, ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station continues to offer a vibrant array of free, family-friendly outdoor performances on the North Promenade. This year’s ARTS DISTRICT Summer Music Series, hosted by the NTC Foundation in partnership with ZIA Productions, is a testament to the power of music to unite communities across borders. Happening every fourth Sunday of the month from June to September, the series aims to bridge the cultural gap between San Diego and Tijuana by spotlighting Latin American genres and local talent.
A Conversation with Gaby Quevedo
Gaby Quevedo, the Associate Director for Creative Enhancement at NTC Foundation, highlighted the significance of this series and its impact on the San Diego-Tijuana community.
“Our goal is to welcome not just the San Diego community but also our neighbors from Tijuana,” Quevedo explained. She emphasized the intention behind this year’s theme, which aligns with the World Design Capital designation of Tijuana and San Diego. “Music is a universal language,” she said. “The lineup reflects this diversity, showcasing a variety of genres and artists who embody the vibrant, multicultural spirit of our community.”
Spotlight on Sonido De La Frontera
One of the most anticipated performances is Sonido De La Frontera, set to take the stage on Sunday, July 28. This trio, consisting of Karlos Paez, Mr. Henshaw, and DJ Unite, brings a unique sound that blends Soundsystem culture, hip hop production aesthetics, and the infectious rhythms of cumbia.
Sonido De La Frontera’s music is a reflection of the border between San Diego and Tijuana, where diverse sounds and cultures intersect. Their lead single, “Somos Sonideros,” is an anthem celebrating the role of DJs, known as Sonideros in Mexico, who energize dance floors with their carefully curated mixes.
An Invitation to the Community
The next performance will feature Sonido De La Frontera on July 28, followed by Nosotros on August 25 and Frontera Bugalú on September 22. Concerts take place from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, providing the perfect opportunity to enjoy a summer evening filled with music and community spirit.

La Serie de Música de Verano del ARTS DISTRICT de este año, organizada por la NTC Foundation en colaboración con ZIA Productions, es un testimonio del poder de la música para unir comunidades a través de las fronteras. “Nuestro objetivo es dar la bienvenida no solo a la comunidad de San Diego, sino también a nuestros vecinos de Tijuana,” explicó Quevedo. Ella enfatizó la intención detrás del tema de este año, que se alinea con la designación de Capital Mundial del Diseño de Tijuana y San Diego. “La música es un lenguaje universal,” dijo. “La programación refleja esta diversidad, mostrando una variedad de géneros y artistas que encarnan el espíritu vibrante y multicultural de nuestra comunidad.”
Enfoque en Sonido De La Frontera
Uno de los espectáculos más esperados es el de Sonido De La Frontera, programado para el domingo 28 de julio. Este trío, compuesto por Karlos Paez, Mr. Henshaw, y DJ Unite, aporta un sonido único que combina la cultura del Soundsystem, la estética de producción de hip hop, y los ritmos contagiosos de la cumbia.
La música de Sonido De La Frontera es un reflejo de la frontera entre San Diego y Tijuana, donde se entrecruzan sonidos y culturas diversas. Su sencillo principal, “Somos Sonideros,” es un himno que celebra el papel de los DJs, conocidos como Sonideros en México, que animan las pistas de baile con sus mezclas cuidadosamente seleccionadas.
