San Diego, CA – This Thanksgiving, thousands of compassionate San Diegans are gearing up for Father Joe’s Villages’ 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K, presented by Aya Healthcare. More than just a race, it’s a community-driven initiative to support neighbors in need and address the pressing issues of hunger and homelessness.

On Thursday, November 23, at 7:30 a.m., Balboa Park will come alive with the sound of footsteps as participants from across the county gather to walk, run, or trot in support of their struggling neighbors. Some may even don festive turkey-themed attire, adding a touch of holiday spirit to the event.

The 5K isn’t just about physical activity; it’s a collective effort to make a significant impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity during the holiday season. All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to funding meals for families and individuals grappling with the harsh realities of hunger.

In a year marked by a 35% increase in homelessness in San Diego, according to the Regional Task Force on Homelessness, the Thanksgiving 5K takes on added significance. Many in the community are not only contending with homelessness but also grappling with food insecurity, inflation, and rising grocery store prices.

Deacon Jim Vargas, President and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages, emphasized the importance of the community’s support: “Food insecurity can be a major obstacle for families in need, and thanks to the generous sponsorship from Aya Healthcare, we’re excited to be able to do something about it. We’re always grateful to the thousands of locals who come together on Thanksgiving morning to help tackle hunger head-on and provide meals to those who need them the most.”

Amber Zeeb, Chief People Officer, EVP, Global Employee Services & Infrastructure at Aya Healthcare, expressed the company’s commitment to the cause: “Giving back and supporting the communities we serve is vital to our employees. We’re proud to again be the Presenting Sponsor and help Father Joe’s Villages provide nutritious meals for individuals and families struggling with food insecurity this holiday season and throughout the year.”

For those unable to participate in the race, the opportunity to contribute remains open through online donations. As San Diegans lace up their running shoes on Thanksgiving morning, they are not just engaging in a 5K; they are stepping forward as a united community to make a tangible difference in the lives of their neighbors in need.
