La Gente: Queen Bee’s Alma Rodriguez

In the heart of North Park, San Diego, there’s a buzzing cultural hub that has become synonymous with creativity, community, and the pursuit of dreams. Queen Bee’s, owned and curated by the visionary Alma Rodriguez, is not just a venue—it’s a testament to passion, perseverance, and the profound impact one person can have on a community.

A Dreamer’s Odyssey: From Teenage Aspirations to Cultural Curatorship

In the groove of life, some people write their melody with unbridled passion and a relentless commitment to creation. Alma Rodriguez stands out as one such maestro of success. “I wanted to be a drummer and I wanted to be in a band. As a teenager, I was just running around, trying to find myself like every child out there,” Rodriguez reflects, navigating the intricate harmonies of her aspirations against the backdrop of societal expectations.

Even when life threw unexpected twists into her score, Rodriguez clung to the rhythm of her dreams. “Things didn’t go the way I was planning, but I always had that dream, you know, of what to do and what I wanted to do in my life,” she asserts. From the beats of her early ambitions to the symphonic resonance of her current pursuits, Rodriguez’s journey exemplifies carving a distinct path and creating a space where dreams find their unique rhythm.

Forging a Unique Path: From Dreamer to Mentor

Her journey to Queen Bee’s is a tapestry woven with the threads of resilience. As a young mother, Rodriguez faced the challenges that came with raising a family while navigating the complexities of her own dreams. “Women have a lot of titles. You can do this, you can do that. But being a young mother, it was hard,” she shares.

Despite the obstacles, Rodriguez seized every opportunity to educate herself, driven by a desire to create and curate something more significant. “Every time I had an opportunity, I would try to educate myself because I wanted to, not because people would say you have to do it,” she says. Her journey, shaped by determination and a relentless pursuit of her aspirations, laid the foundation for Queen Bee’s unique identity.

Unlike many success stories that involve mentorship within the same field, Rodriguez carved her own path. “I never thought about being a role model for anybody until recently,” she confesses. Her journey of self-discovery led her to a point where young individuals started seeking guidance. “I think mentoring someone to not make it as hard as it was for me is more satisfying than money,” she adds.

Inspiring Pride: When Queen Bee’s Sets the Stage for Change

When Rodriguez moved to North Park in 2000, she found a community rich in art and creativity. Over the years, Queen Bee’s has become a cultural staple, impacting the neighborhood beyond just entertainment. Rodriguez has facilitated a platform where people can create their events, fostering a sense of belonging and shared experiences. “You find ways to do things in life and not let anybody stop it. When I moved to San Diego, I definitely wanted to start something new and different,” Rodriguez emphasizes.

One remarkable testament to the impact of Queen Bee’s is the Pride director who found inspiration within its walls.Rodriguez recounts the Pride director sharing, “The reason why we started the Pride division is because of you.” The director expressed how attending an event at Queen Bee’s eight years ago left a lasting impression, influencing their decision to bring the same sense of community and collaboration to the LGBTQ+ youth.

Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of Alma Rodriguez

Every morning, Rodriguez immerses herself in the world of Queen Bee’s, a space that has become a canvas for diverse expressions. “For me to be here in my own little castle and create something and kind of open the ideas to the world. That’s what I love – when people become part of the hype,” Rodriguez reflects on the unique space she has cultivated at Queen Bee’s. Her venue is not merely a stage; it’s a haven where ideas are born, and creativity thrives. “I like to know the person that I’m working with and want them to know me as well,” she says, emphasizing the importance of personal connections. “Sometimes, when people approach me [they say] ‘oh, I want to do a show here’ and they either show me their videos or want me to listen to the song and I’m like no, I’d rather see your life.” she adds. Rodriguez’s insistence on authenticity and connection echoes in every event hosted at Queen Bee’s. “I like to know the person first, and what their passion is. And then I like to know why they do what they do” Rodriguez states. Her approach to understanding artists goes beyond the superficial, delving into their motivations and talents.

Celebrating 15 Years: Inviting the Community to Share in the Milestone

“I just want people to come in and experience our 15-year anniversary. To me, I went through all the challenges that went through all these 15 years and I have heard some people say, ‘Oh, you’re not going to last, it’s too hard.’ But one thing led to the other and the support of the community has made Queen Bee’s what it is. I’m really thankful and want to show my love to them. The 15-year anniversary is a way for me to show my gratitude to be here for them,” Rodriguez expresses, inviting everyone to join in the celebration.

Her goal is not just to create entertainment spaces but to inspire future entrepreneurs, especially young women, to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
