The San Diego Legion made a group appearance Thursday in Mission Hills to talk about their prospective 2023 season, which starts next Saturday, February 18. The start will be the team’s sixth season in Major League Rugby.

“We spent the offseason looking at how we want to play the game and what we needed to do to win this competition… We believe we’re in a really good place. We have a great bunch of men. Exactly what we’re after.” stated head coach Danny Lee, when asked for his impression of the upcoming season.

Team Captain, Blair Cowan, also had a chance to speak last night. Cowan acknowledged his appreciation for being chosen as captain by his teammates. “I thank the boys for the way they responded and showed me respect…The only way I know how to do it is to train hard, play hard and have a good time.” Cowan then followed with, “It’s a huge honor to represent San Diego. It’s such a beautiful part of the world.”

The American professional rugby team is filled with players dedicated to helping the community. Nate Augspurger, back/scrum-half, spends part of his free time helping the local youth enter and thrive in the world of rugby. Augspurger helps various age groups, from assisting the U14-18 in Poway to guiding the San Diego Mustangs, a youth rugby club located in San Diego. “I have a heart for passing along the tools that I was given along my journey. To me, rugby is a vehicle I can get through to people in the community; help show them they can overcome their odds, their challenges. When I was growing up, we didn’t have as much opportunity with Rugby.”

The Legion will play their 2023 season at Snapdragon stadium, located at the SDSU Mission Valley Campus. The new opportunity did not go unnoticed by Will Hooley, back/fly-half.  “It’s state of the art. It’s such a privilege and honor to have the chance to play in a venue like [Snapdragon].”

(The event also showcased the Legion’s new team jerseys, shown above.)
