SAN DIEGO – A full closure of northbound Interstate 5 (I-5) is scheduled from Carlsbad Village Drive to State Route 78 (SR 78) on Monday, April 15, starting at 11:30 p.m. This closure, facilitated by Caltrans and SANDAG Build NCC Crews, is vital for the safe installation of an overhead sign structure across all lanes.

To navigate around the closure, northbound drivers will be directed to exit at Carlsbad Village Drive and follow the detour route using Carlsbad Village Drive to El Camino Real. However, access to northbound I-5 will still be available from Vista Way or SR 78. Expect detour signage along with lane closures until the expected reopening on Tuesday, April 16, at 4:30 a.m.

Residents and businesses nearby should anticipate nighttime construction activities, including lights and noise. Efforts will be made to minimize disruptions, and motorists will receive guidance through signage and traffic controls.

The closure is part of the $882 million Build NCC project, funded in part by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1) and SANDAG TransNet funding. SB 1 contributes $5 billion annually to transportation projects, expediting construction phases like those in Build NCC. TransNet, a half-cent sales tax managed by SANDAG, allocates $141 million to Build NCC for various infrastructure enhancements.

As construction progresses, drivers are reminded to adhere to safety measures, including the “Drive 55 on the 5” initiative and observing doubled fines in construction zones. For assistance, motorists can utilize the SANDAG Motorist Aid Service by dialing 5-1-1. Remember to comply with the “Move Over” law when approaching emergency vehicles.
